Sacred Sites

Kars preserves a significant collection of medieval religious architecture, primarily from the Bagratid Armenian era. This list features the massive 11th-century Cathedral of Ani and the nearby 7th-century Church of St Gregory of Abughamrens, showcasing the distinct red-and-black masonry of the region. Beyond the ruins of Ani, the collection includes the 10th-century Church of the Holy Apostles—now the Kümbet Mosque—and the well-preserved Eghegnamor Monastery in Çengilli. These sites, ranging from the early Christian Yereruyk Basilica to abandoned cathedrals like Mren, illustrate the intersection of Armenian, Byzantine, and Islamic architectural traditions.
