Uherské Hradiště

Localidad · 🇨🇿 Chequia

Uherské Hradiště sits on the Morava river in southeastern Moravia, at the heart of the Slovácko folklore region and Moravian wine country. King Ottokar II founded the town on a river island in 1257, naming it Nový Veligrad after the legendary capital of Great Moravia — a nod to the earlier Slavic stronghold that once stood nearby at Staré Město. Whether this really was Great Moravia's lost capital is still debated among historians, but the area's importance in that early medieval state is well established.

The compact old town rewards a short, unhurried visit: a baroque main square, a former synagogue turned public library, and a museum devoted to the region's folk traditions. Most visitors use the town as a base for exploring Slovácko's vineyards, wine cellars and villages, rather than as a long standalone stop.

Cuándo viajar

Spring and autumn are mild and good for walking the old town or cycling among the vineyards. Summers are warm, with July and August days averaging around 24 °C, while winters are cold with regular snow from November through March.

Plan around the Summer Film School (Letní filmová škola), held every year in late July: one of the country's biggest film festivals, filling cinemas and open-air screens across town for a week.

Mejor época para viajar: mayo, junio, agosto, septiembre

Lugares destacados

Church of St Francis Xavier anchors the main square. Built between 1670 and 1685 for the town's Jesuit college, it is the single most recognizable building in Uherské Hradiště.

A short walk away, Kostel Zvěstování Panny Marie belongs to a Franciscan monastery founded in 1491, though the church itself was rebuilt after the Thirty Years' War and again in the 18th century.

Slovácké muzeum has covered the ethnography, archaeology and history of the Slovácko region since 1914, including finds from the area's Great Moravian past.

Housed in a former 1875 synagogue, Knihovna Bedřicha Beneše Buchlovana is worth a look for the building alone, even if you are not borrowing a book.

Skanzen Rochus is an open-air museum of Slovácko folk architecture, with farmhouses and orchards recreated on a hill above the town.

For a break from sightseeing, Smetanovy sady is a shaded park in the centre with a memorial to composer Bedřich Smetana, and Jezuitská zahrada offers a quieter, greener corner nearby.

With children, Aquapark Uherské Hradiště has indoor and outdoor pools, slides and a sauna zone — a good option on a rainy day.

Listas destacadas

Qué experimentar

  • Cycle the Moravian Wine Trails. Flat, well-signed routes run from town out into the Slovácko vineyards — a full day's ride or a short loop are both easy to plan.
  • Take a boat trip on the Baťa Canal. Built in the 1930s to move lignite for the Baťa shoe company, the canal now carries pleasure boats along the Morava river past Staré Město; short cruises and rental boats run in the warmer months.
  • Visit a wine cellar (vinný sklep). Slovácko is Moravian wine country, and many villages around town open family-run cellars for tastings of local white wines.
  • Catch the Ride of the Kings at Pentecost. If your visit lines up with the festival, head to nearby Vlčnov (or, less often, Kunovice or Hluk) to see this UNESCO-listed folk ceremony in traditional Slovácko costume.

Excursiones de un día

Uherské Hradiště sits at the centre of Slovácko, so the best day trips are close — vineyards, wine cellars and historic villages are never far away.

  • Staré Město — 5 minutes by bus or bike, right across the river. This unassuming suburb sits on part of the Great Moravian-era settlement archaeologists link to the Veligrad hypothesis, with small open-air exhibits marking the finds.
  • Velehrad — about 10 minutes by car or bus. Its basilica is the country's most important pilgrimage site, tied to the missionary saints Cyril and Methodius and visited twice by Pope John Paul II. Tens of thousands of pilgrims come each year.
  • Kunovice — about 10 minutes away, home to an aviation museum built around the town's long-running aircraft industry.
  • Buchlovice and Buchlov Castle — roughly 30 minutes by car. Buchlovice pairs a Baroque chateau with an Italian-style garden; a few kilometres on, the medieval Buchlov Castle sits on a forested hilltop.
  • Vlčnov — about 20 minutes away, the main stage for the Ride of the Kings (Jízda králů), a UNESCO-listed folk ceremony held at Pentecost each spring, in which a masked "king" is paraded through the village on horseback.
  • Mikulčice — about 45 minutes by car. This is the most important Great Moravian archaeological site in Central Europe, with the foundations of a fortified settlement and several stone churches.

Cómo llegar

  • By air: the nearest airport with scheduled passenger flights is Brno–Tuřany, about 50 km away — around 1 hour 15 minutes by direct bus, or roughly 2 hours by train. Vienna's airport is a further option for international connections, about 3 hours away by direct train or car.
  • By train: regional trains connect Uherské Hradiště with Otrokovice and Brno, with onward connections toward Prague, Zlín and Ostrava.
  • By bus: long-distance coaches link the town directly with Brno, Prague and other Czech cities, often faster than the train on this route.

Cómo desplazarse

  • On foot: the historic centre is small and entirely walkable — most top sights are within a 10-minute walk of the main square.
  • Public transit: local buses reach the outer districts and neighbouring Staré Město and Kunovice; buy tickets from the driver or by SMS.
  • Cycling: the town sits on the flat, well-marked Moravian Wine Trails network, which makes cycling out to nearby vineyards and wine cellars an easy option.

Conducción

  • Is a car worth it?: not needed for the town itself, but useful for reaching wine villages and castles around Slovácko at your own pace.
  • Parking: paid zones surround the pedestrianised centre; park at the edge and walk in rather than trying to drive to the main square.
  • Restrictions: no congestion charge or low-emission zone; parts of the historic centre are pedestrian-only.

Gastronomía

Slovácko cuisine leans on the region's orchards and vineyards: expect frgál (a large, fruit-topped yeast cake), hearty pork dishes, and homemade slivovice (plum brandy) offered as a matter of course.

For dinner, look to the streets around the main square rather than any single address — cafés and regional restaurants cluster there, many pouring local wine by the glass. For something more specific to the season, seek out a village wine cellar rather than a restaurant in town.

Seguridad y salud

Uherské Hradiště is a low-crime regional town, and visitors rarely encounter more than the ordinary caution needed around any crowded festival or parking area. Keep an eye on bags during the Summer Film School and other big events, when the town is at its busiest.

Historia

King Ottokar II founded Uherské Hradiště on Saint George's Island in the Morava river on 15 October 1257, calling it Nový Veligrad — "New Veligrad" — after the legendary capital of Great Moravia. The choice of name was deliberate: the surrounding area, including modern Staré Město, had been a major Great Moravian settlement in the 9th century, and archaeologists still debate whether it was part of Veligrad itself. Some ruins from that era survive as the Archaeological Site at Sady, on a low hill above the town.

The medieval town grew as a fortified outpost guarding the border with Hungary, which is where its current name comes from ("Uherské" means "Hungarian"). Franciscan friars arrived in 1491 and built what is now Kostel Zvěstování Panny Marie; Jesuits followed in the 17th century, building Church of St Francis Xavier on the main square between 1670 and 1685 as the centrepiece of a college that shaped the town's cultural life for over a century.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Uherské Hradiště had become the unofficial capital of the Slovácko region, a role reflected in Slovácké muzeum, founded in 1914 to document the area's folk life and archaeology.
