Meiji Shrine

Local name本殿
LocationTokyo, Japan

This wonderful complex combines traditional Japanese architecture and enchanting nature. It is devoted to the spirits of emperor Meiji and his wife. If you are lucky, you may even witness a traditional Japanese wedding here. The forest surrounding the shrine is believed to bring about good fortune.

Emperor Meiji, after whom an entire era of Japanese history is called, lead the nation into a period of a dramatic modernization in the 19th century. Under his rule, Japan took over many Western inventions, ended the 250 years long period of closed borders policy, reformed its military system and government and rapidly started to emerge as one of the advanced nations of the age.

The complex is separated from the city by a great forest created by hundreds of thousands of trees that were donated by people from all over the country, to protect the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and the Empress Dowager.
