Historic Forts and Castles

Ghana's coastline is home to a dense concentration of fortified structures built between 1482 and 1784 by European powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Danes. This collection features UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Saint George’s Castle in Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, which functioned as central hubs for the transatlantic slave trade. The list also includes inland landmarks like the Manhyia Palace, the official residence of the Asantehene. These sites document the region's transition from gold trading to the slave trade and eventual colonial administration.
