Hrútafjörður Essentials

Hrútafjörður serves as a scenic transition between West and North Iceland. This 36-kilometer-long fjord is anchored by the historic village of Borðeyri and the iconic Staðarskáli rest stop, long considered the midpoint of the Ring Road. Hrútafjörður

Hrútafjörður is a fjord in the north-west of Iceland. It is around 36 km long and lies to the south of Húnaflói bay.

Byggðasafn Húnvetninga og Strandamanna

Regional heritage museum located at Reykir. It features exhibits on local rural life, including historical artifacts from the Húnaflói area and the history of shark fishing.

Staðarkirkja

A timber church built in 1890. Located at the historic Staður farm, it represents traditional Icelandic church architecture from the late 19th century.

Staðarskáli

A historic roadside service station and restaurant. It has served as the primary rest stop and meeting point for travelers crossing the Holtavörðuheiði plateau for decades.

Riishús Borðeyri

A historic timber house built in 1862 in Borðeyri. Originally a merchant's house, it now operates as a seasonal café and cultural center.

Prestsbakkakirkja

A concrete church consecrated in 1957. It is situated on a historic church site on the western side of the fjord, replacing an older wooden structure.

A sculpture by Hallsteinn Sigurðsson dedicated to the memory of rural mail carriers who historically traversed Iceland's rugged terrain on foot and horseback.
