Alpine Huts of Rauris

The Rauris Valley, historically known for gold mining, features a network of high-altitude shelters and traditional dairy farms. This selection includes the Zittelhaus, perched atop the 3,106-meter Hoher Sonnblick alongside Europe’s highest permanent meteorological station. Other highlights include historic structures like the Naturfreundehaus Neubau, linked to the region’s mining heritage, and remote emergency shelters like the Otto-Umlauft-Biwak, providing essential refuge for mountaineers traversing the Goldberg Group.

Zittelhaus

Managed by the Austrian Alpine Club, this hut sits at 3,106 meters on the summit of Hoher Sonnblick. It shares the peak with a high-altitude meteorological observatory.

Gainschniggalm

A traditional alpine dairy hut located at 1,740 meters in the Kolm Saigurn area, offering local products and views of the Goldberg Group.

Naturfreundehaus Kolm-Saigurn

Situated at 1,598 meters at the head of the valley, this Naturfreunde shelter is located in a former gold mining district at the foot of Hoher Sonnblick.

Rojacher Hütte

A Category I shelter of the Austrian Alpine Club, built in 1899 at 2,710 meters. It serves as a key base for the ascent to the Sonnblick summit.

Naturfreundehaus Neubau

Located at 2,175 meters along the Tauerngold hiking trail, this hut occupies a site significant to the region's historical gold mining operations.

Niedersachsenhaus

This German Alpine Club hut sits at 2,471 meters on the Riffelscharte, marking the ridge between the Rauris and Gastein valleys.

Durchgangalm

An alpine pasture hut at 1,742 meters, typically used as a stop for hikers exploring the Kolm Saigurn valley floor.

Mitterastenalm

A mountain hut at 1,756 meters, accessible via the Rauris Primeval Forest trail, known for its traditional wooden architecture.

Märchenkarhütte

Alpine hut located in the scenic Kolm Saigurn basin.

Ammererhof

A long-standing mountain guesthouse at 1,630 meters, originally established to serve the local mining community at the head of the valley.

Otto-Umlauft-Biwak

An unmanned emergency bivouac box located at 2,987 meters on the Krumlkeeskopfscharte, maintained by the Klagenfurt section of the Austrian Alpine Club.
