Shanxi province preserves China’s most significant collection of ancient defensive and religious architecture. This selection features the 14th-century intact walls of Pingyao, the strategic Yanmen Pass of the Great Wall, and the subterranean military tunnels of Zhangbi. Pinglu Castle

Also known as Phoenix City, this Ming Dynasty fortification was established in the Jiajing era. It functioned as a military administrative center and retains its original earthen wall layout and traditional gate structures.

Huayan Monastery

A major Buddhist complex dating to the Liao and Jin dynasties. It houses the Daxiongbao Hall, one of China's largest wooden halls, and a library containing 31 well-preserved Liao Dynasty clay statues.

Shanhua Monastry

A large Buddhist temple complex dating back to the Tang Dynasty. Notable for its Liao and Jin dynasty architecture, it contains the Great Main Hall and a significant collection of Ming Dynasty frescoes and sculptures.
