Shanxi province preserves China’s most significant collection of ancient defensive and religious architecture. This selection features the 14th-century intact walls of Pingyao, the strategic Yanmen Pass of the Great Wall, and the subterranean military tunnels of Zhangbi. Beyond fortifications, the list covers the 5th-century Yungang Grottoes, the wooden Sakyamuni Pagoda, and the Liao Dynasty temples of Datong, representing over 1,500 years of Chinese engineering and Buddhist artistry.
