Spoleto's Historic Ruins

Spoleto’s archaeological landscape spans from the Roman era to the early Middle Ages. The collection includes the 1st-century Roman amphitheater and the Arco di Druso e Germanico, which served as a ceremonial entrance to the ancient forum. The UNESCO-listed Basilica of San Salvatore and the nearby Tempietto del Clitunno represent rare Langobardic architecture. Overlooking the city, the 14th-century Rocca Albornoziana fortress sits atop Sant'Elia hill, while underground discoveries like the Ponte Sanguinario and the mosaic-floored Casa Romana reveal the city's ancient domestic and civic infrastructure.

Rocca Albornoziana

A 14th-century fortress built between 1359 and 1370 on Sant'Elia hill. It served as a defensive stronghold and papal residence, featuring six square towers and two internal courtyards.

Anfiteatro Romano

A 2nd-century AD monumental complex located north of the city center. Historically used as a quarry for building materials, the site now hosts performances and houses the National Archaeological Museum.
