Syrmia District Essentials
Syrmia District preserves layers of European history, from the excavated streets of Sirmium, once a capital of the Roman Empire, to the medieval fortifications of Kupinik and Šabac. The Fruška Gora mountain range is home to a dense concentration of 15th and 16th-century Serbian Orthodox monasteries, including Krušedol and Novo Hopovo. Significant historical markers include the site of the 1691 Battle of Slankamen and the World War II Syrmian Front, while modern engineering is represented by the Beška Bridge and the pedestrian Bridge of Saint Irenaeus.
