Zanzibar South & Central Essentials

Zanzibar’s South and Central regions offer a mix of conservation areas and cultural heritage. Jozani Forest protects the endemic Red Colobus monkey, while the 12th-century Kizimkazi Mosque marks one of the oldest Islamic sites on the East African coast. Coastal areas like Paje and Jambiani are centers for traditional seaweed farming and dhow building. Natural features include the limestone swimming pools of Cuza Cave and the tidal rock formations at Mtende Beach, alongside working spice plantations growing cloves, vanilla, and nutmeg.

The Rock

Coastal site where local women cultivate and harvest seaweed in the shallow intertidal zones. The raw material is processed nearby to create soaps, oils, and skincare products using traditional methods.
