Peaks and Nature Trails
Acadia National Park’s landscape is defined by glaciated granite peaks and a rugged Atlantic coastline. This selection highlights the park's diverse topography, from the summit of Cadillac Mountain—the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard—to the technical iron-rung climbs of The Beehive and Champlain Mountain. These trails traverse ancient geological formations, offering views of Somes Sound, the only fjord on the U.S. East Coast, and freshwater glacial basins like Echo Lake. The routes feature historic stone masonry and varied ecosystems ranging from maritime forests to subalpine ridges.
A Cadillac Mountain
Cadillac Mountain is located on Mount Desert Island, within Acadia National Park, in the U.S. state of Maine.
B The Beehive
A granite dome featuring a steep ascent via iron-rung ladders and narrow ledges. It overlooks Sand Beach and Great Head.
Echo Lake
A freshwater glacial lake on the western side of Mount Desert Island, featuring a swimming beach and views of the Beech Cliff granite walls.
Beech Mountain
A peak on the western side of the park featuring a historic 1960s fire lookout tower. The summit provides views of Long Pond and the Atlantic Ocean.
Dorr Mountain
The second-highest peak in the park, featuring extensive stone stairways and rock-cut paths. It is separated from Cadillac Mountain by a deep gorge.
Acadia Mountain
A peak overlooking Somes Sound, the only fjord on the Atlantic coast. The trail descends steeply through forested terrain toward the water.
North Bubble
The higher of the two 'Bubble' peaks, offering views of Jordan Pond. It sits above the famous 'Bubble Rock,' a large glacial erratic.
Gorham Mountain
A 525-foot peak providing views of the Atlantic coastline and Sand Beach. The trail passes through spruce forests and granite outcrops.
Champlain Mountain
Home to the Precipice Trail, the park's steepest iron-rung climb. Its eastern cliffs serve as a seasonal nesting site for peregrine falcons.
Saint Sauveur Mountain
A forested peak on the western side of Somes Sound. The summit offers views of the Great Harbor and the Cranberry Isles.
