Bicaz-Chei Essentials

Bicaz-Chei serves as the gateway to the Bicaz Gorge-Hășmaș National Park, a region defined by massive limestone cliffs and the Bicaz River. This selection features the narrowest canyon sections, such as Hell’s Throat, alongside the 1,154-meter Piatra Altarului peak. The area offers technical climbing routes, the Astragalus via ferrata in the Șugău Gorges, and the secluded Bicăjel Gorge. The landscape is characterized by road tunnels cut directly into the rock and diverse alpine flora.

Bicaz Gorge

The Bicaz Gorge is a gorge in northeast Romania, in Neamț and Harghita counties.

Altar stone

A 1,154-meter-high limestone massif and the most prominent rock tower in the Bicaz Gorge. It is a major destination for technical rock climbing in the Hășmaș Mountains.

Hell's throat

The narrowest and most dramatic section of the Bicaz Gorge, where limestone walls rise vertically hundreds of meters above the road and river.

Canyon stone

A prominent limestone peak located on the right side of the Bicaz River, offering views over the gorge and the surrounding karst landscape.

Cheile Șugăului

A protected nature reserve featuring narrow limestone passages, rare endemic plants, and several caves and climbing sectors.

Tunnels

Road tunnels carved directly into the massive limestone cliffs of the Bicaz Gorge to facilitate passage through the steepest canyon sections.

Poarta de Piatra

A natural rock formation resembling a stone gate, located near the entrance to the Bicăjel Gorge.

Hell's Gate

A distinctive rock passage located within the Gâtul Iadului (Hell's Throat) sector of the Bicaz Gorge.

Via Ferrata “Astragalus”

The longest via ferrata in Romania, located in the Cheile Șugăului-Munticelu Nature Reserve, featuring five routes of varying difficulty.

Cheile Bicăjelului

A secluded gorge formed by the Bicăjel River, a tributary of the Bicaz, known for its small waterfalls and hiking trails.
