Calanques & Coastal Nature
Cassis is defined by a unique karstic landscape where dramatic limestone cliffs meet the Mediterranean. This selection highlights the region's complex hydrological features, including the massive submarine springs of Port-Miou and Bestouan, which discharge freshwater directly into the sea. The area features the Calanque de Port-Miou, a former quarry turned natural harbor, alongside vertical sinkholes like the Aven de la Gorguette and the sheer climbing faces of the Falaise du Calendal.
A Exsurgence de Port-Miou
A major submarine karstic spring discharging approximately 7 cubic meters of freshwater per second. It features a vast underwater gallery system frequently explored by technical cave divers.
Calanque de Port-Miou
The easternmost calanque and a former limestone quarry. It serves as a sheltered natural harbor and the primary trailhead for hiking routes leading into the Calanques National Park.
Émergence du Bestouan
A significant submarine karstic outlet located near Bestouan beach. The explored underwater cave system extends several kilometers inland through the limestone bedrock.
Aven de la Gorguette
A vertical limestone sinkhole, or aven, situated on the plateau. It represents a key entry point to the region's subterranean drainage network.
Falaise du Calendal
A prominent limestone cliff offering established rock climbing routes with direct views over the Mediterranean and the coastal landscape of Cassis.
