Beyond the world-famous cathedral, Chartres preserves significant layers of civic and scientific history. This collection features the remnants of the city's medieval and Renaissance fortifications, including the 16th-century clock tower and the ruins of the Porte Guillaume. It also highlights monuments dedicated to notable local figures: Louis Pasteur, whose research into anthrax vaccines took place in the surrounding countryside, and Noël Ballay, a prominent 19th-century doctor and colonial governor born in the region.
