Ancient Megalithic Tombs
Drenthe is home to 52 surviving hunebedden, megalithic portal tombs constructed by the Funnelbeaker culture between 3400 and 2850 BC. These structures consist of massive granite erratic boulders deposited during the Saale glaciation. Originally covered by earthen mounds, these Neolithic monuments served as collective burial sites. This selection includes the largest specimen at Borger and various well-preserved examples scattered across the heathlands and forests of the Hondsrug region.
A Hunebed D27 Borger
The largest hunebed in the Netherlands, measuring 22.6 meters long with nine massive capstones. It is located adjacent to the Hunebedcentrum museum.
B Hunebed D16 Balloo
A well-preserved megalithic tomb situated on the Balloërveld heath, featuring nine capstones and visible remains of its original entrance.
C Hunebed D30 Boswachterij Exloo
A medium-sized Neolithic tomb located in a forest clearing near Exloo, retaining several original side stones and capstones.
D Hunebed G1 Noordlaren
The only megalithic tomb located in the province of Groningen. This passage grave sits on the Hondsrug ridge near the Drenthe border.
E Hunebed D5 Zeijen
A passage grave featuring its original entrance stones, located near the village of Zeijen in a landscape rich with archaeological history.
F Hunebed D31 Hunzebos
Situated in the Hunzebos forest, this site features a restored burial chamber and is positioned along a prehistoric walking route near Exloo.
G Hunebed D11 Anloo
Located in the Kniphorstbos archaeological reserve, this tomb is surrounded by Bronze Age burial mounds and ancient cart tracks.
H Hunebed D2 Westervelde
A notable megalithic tomb where rare bronze artifacts were discovered during excavations. It is situated in a small grove near Westervelde.
I Hunebed D26 Drouwenerveld
A medium-sized Neolithic tomb located within the Drouwenerveld nature reserve, known for its scenic heathland setting.
J Hunebed D32 Odoorn
A small, partially collapsed megalithic tomb located on the edge of the forest near Odoorn.
K Hunebed D14 Eexterhalte
A large tomb featuring eighteen side stones and eight capstones, located near a former railway stop in the Eext region.
L Hunebed D34 Valthe West
One of two tombs near Valthe, this megalithic structure is situated on a high point in the local landscape.
M Hunebed D21 Bronneger
A well-preserved portal grave and one of a cluster of five Neolithic tombs located closely together near the village of Bronneger.
N Hunebed D1 Steenbergen
The northernmost hunebed in Drenthe, featuring a distinctive high-set capstone and views over the surrounding agricultural fields.
O Hunebed D53 Havelterberg
One of the largest tombs in the region at 18 meters long. It was dismantled during WWII and meticulously reconstructed in its original location.
P Hunebed D10 Gasteren
A picturesque tomb located on the edge of the Gasterse Duinen nature reserve, characterized by its partially sunken appearance.
Q Hunebed D13 Eext
A rare 'staircase grave' where the burial chamber was built entirely underground and was originally accessible via a stone staircase.
R Hunebed D12 Eexter Es
A small, simple megalithic tomb located on the open fields of the Eexter Es, featuring three capstones.
