Historic Fortifications

Epirus preserves a diverse array of fortifications reflecting its Byzantine and Ottoman history. The Castle of Ioannina features two distinct citadels—Its Kale and Aslan Pasha—overlooking Lake Pamvotis. Along the coast, the Venetian Castle of Parga and Ali Pasha’s stronghold at Anthoussa highlight strategic maritime defenses. Inland, the high-altitude Castle of Kiafa in Souli and the late Ottoman Fort of Laskara near Preveza represent the region's long-standing military significance and architectural evolution.

Venetian castle

Originally built in the 11th century to protect against pirate raids, the current structure was significantly fortified by the Venetians in the 16th century and later by Ali Pasha. It overlooks the town and the Ionian Sea.

Its Kale Citadel

The southeastern citadel of the Castle of Ioannina, which served as the administrative center during the Ottoman era. It contains the Fethiye Mosque, the tomb of Ali Pasha, and the Byzantine Museum.

Fort of Laskara

A late Ottoman-era fortification built in 1892. Located on a hill near Preveza, it was part of a defensive network guarding the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf.

Aslan Pasha Citadel

The northwestern citadel of the Castle of Ioannina, dominated by the 17th-century Aslan Pasha Mosque. It marks the site of the former Byzantine palace and now houses the Municipal Ethnographic Museum.

Castle of Kiafa (Souli)

A mountain fortress built by Ali Pasha in 1801 to subdue the Souliotes. Situated at an altitude of 460 meters, it features thick stone walls and circular towers characteristic of early 19th-century military architecture.

Kastro Anthousas

Also known as Ali Pasha’s Castle, this well-preserved fortress was built in 1814 to monitor the town of Parga. It features a massive gate, a central courtyard, and offers panoramic coastal views.
