Lake Tekapo / Takapō Must-Sees

Lake Tekapo / Takapō sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, offering some of the world's clearest stargazing. The lake's distinct turquoise color comes from fine rock flour suspended in glacial meltwater. Key landmarks include the 1935 stone Church of the Good Shepherd and the nearby Sheep Dog Memorial. For panoramic views and astronomical research, the Mount John Observatory overlooks the basin, while the Dark Sky Project provides indoor educational experiences and houses a 125-year-old Victorian telescope.
