Museums of Mokpo

Mokpo’s cultural landscape is defined by its maritime heritage and colonial history. This collection features the National Maritime Museum, home to a 14th-century shipwreck, and the Modern History Museum housed in the former Japanese Consulate. The Gatbawi Cultural District anchors several institutions, including the Natural History Museum with its rare dinosaur egg fossils and the Namnong Memorial Hall, which preserves the legacy of the Southern School of Korean literati painting.

Mokpo Modern History Museum

Housed in the red-brick former Japanese Consulate built in 1900, this museum documents the city’s colonial-era urban development and resistance movements through photographs and historical artifacts.

National Haeyang Museum

This national research center displays underwater archaeological finds, including the 14th-century Sinan shipwreck, a Chinese merchant vessel, and thousands of Goryeo-era celadon ceramics recovered from the seabed.

Mokpo Natural History Museum
