Santiponce Essentials

Santiponce preserves the remains of Italica, the first Roman city founded in Hispania and the birthplace of emperors Trajan and Hadrian. The archaeological site features one of the empire’s largest amphitheaters, intricate mosaics, and grand public baths. Beyond the Roman ruins, the town is home to the 14th-century Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, a fortified religious complex showcasing Mudejar and Gothic architecture and the tomb of Guzmán el Bueno.

Italica

Italica was an ancient Roman city in Hispania; its site is close to the town of Santiponce in the province of Seville, Spain.

Monasterio de San Isidoro del Campo

Founded in 1301 by Guzmán el Bueno, this fortified monastery features a blend of Gothic and Mudejar architecture. It contains two parallel churches and serves as the burial site for the Guzmán family.

Templo de Trajano

A monumental marble temple dedicated to Emperor Trajan, commissioned by his successor Hadrian. It was located at the center of the Nova Urbs and surrounded by a porticoed plaza.

Teatro Romano

Dating back to the era of Augustus, this theater was built into a natural hillside. It features a semi-circular orchestra and cavea, and today hosts the Italica International Dance Festival.

Baths of Reina Mora

Large public thermal complex dating from the reign of Hadrian. The ruins include the remains of the caldarium, frigidarium, and palestra, spanning an entire city block.

Termas menores

Built during the reign of Trajan, these smaller public baths predate the larger Hadrianic complex. The site preserves portions of the heating systems and mosaic floors.
