Simpson Desert Essentials

The Simpson Desert encompasses over 170,000 square kilometers of parallel red sand dunes across central Australia. This collection highlights the desert's geographical extremes and historical gateways. It includes Big Red, the region's tallest dune at 40 meters, and the anomalous Lone Gum Tree. The route features the 19th-century Birdsville Hotel and the Purni Bore wetland, an artificial oasis created by a deep artesian well. These sites represent the intersection of harsh desert ecology and the remote outback settlements that support trans-desert travel.

Simpson Desert Essentials

The Simpson Desert contains the world's longest parallel sand dunes and a complex network of seasonal lakes and claypans. This collection highlights Big Red, the desert's highest dune at 40 meters, alongside vital water sources like Eyre Creek and Muncoonie Lake. These landmarks define the arid geography of the Munga-Thirri National Park, where ancient drainage systems create temporary wetlands and salt crusts across the South Australian and Queensland borders.

Natural Wonders

The Simpson Desert spans the intersection of the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Queensland, featuring the world’s longest parallel sand dunes. This arid landscape is defined by its vibrant red sand and a complex system of ephemeral lakes and wetlands. These water bodies, such as Lake Griselda and Andado Swamp, remain dry for years, filling only during rare, significant rainfall events to create temporary habitats for migratory birds and local wildlife amidst the expansive dunefields.
