Trabzon’s religious landscape is defined by its transition from a Byzantine stronghold to an Ottoman imperial city. This collection highlights significant sites like the 13th-century Hagia Sophia and the Ortahisar Fatih Grand Mosque, both former churches showcasing Christian frescoes alongside Islamic modifications. It also includes the 16th-century Gülbahar Hatun complex, built by Sultan Selim I for his mother, and the centrally located Iskender Paşa Mosque. These structures represent the city's architectural layers, from Byzantine masonry to classical Ottoman dome construction.

Aya Sofya Museum

Hagia Sophia is a formerly Greek Orthodox church that was converted into a mosque following the conquest of Trabzon by Mehmed II in 1461.

Gulbahar Hatun Mosque

Commissioned by Sultan Selim I in 1514 in honor of his mother, this mosque is a prime example of early classical Ottoman architecture. It features a square prayer hall topped by a large dome and a portico with five smaller domes.

Gulbahar Hatun Tomb

An octagonal mausoleum built in 1506 for Gülbahar Hatun, the mother of Sultan Selim I. The structure is situated within the mosque complex and is constructed from alternating layers of local stone.

Ortahisar Fatih Grand Mosque

Formerly the Byzantine Church of Panagia Chrysokephalos, this site served as the cathedral of the Empire of Trebizond. Converted into a mosque in 1461 by Mehmed II, it retains its basilica plan and medieval masonry.

Iskender Paşa Camii

Built in 1529 by the governor Iskender Pasha, this Ottoman mosque features a traditional single-dome design and a small cemetery containing the tombs of historical local dignitaries.

Yeni Kemerkaya Mosque

A 19th-century mosque located in the Kemerkaya district, featuring a simple rectangular plan and traditional stone masonry characteristic of the late Ottoman period.

A 14th-century stone mausoleum located in the Ortahisar district, dedicated to a local ruler from the Turkmen era.
