Vágar Essentials

Vágar contains some of the Faroe Islands' most recognizable natural landmarks. The island is defined by Sørvágsvatn, a lake that appears to hover above the Atlantic Ocean, and the 30-meter Múlafossur waterfall which drops directly into the sea from the village of Gásadalur. Geologic features include the Trælanípa "Slave Cliff" and the 313-meter Trøllkonufingur sea stack. The red-roofed Sandavágs kirkja, built in 1917, houses a 13th-century runestone, providing historical context to the island's dramatic coastal scenery.

Múlafossur

A 30-meter waterfall that plunges from the cliffs of Gásadalur directly into the North Atlantic. It became easily accessible via a road tunnel in 2004, connecting the previously isolated village to the rest of the island.

Sørvágsvatn

Leitisvatn is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. It is situated on the island of Vágar between the municipalities of Sørvágur and Vágar.

Trælanípa

A 142-meter perpendicular cliff at the end of Sørvágsvatn lake. Known as the "Slave Cliff," it offers an optical illusion where the lake appears to be perched significantly higher than the ocean below.

Bøsdalafossur

The waterfall where the waters of Sørvágsvatn lake flow over a rocky threshold and drop 30 meters directly into the Atlantic Ocean.

Trøllkonufingur

A 313-meter-high pointed sea stack, also known as the "Witch's Finger," visible from the village of Sandavágur. It was first climbed in 1844 and again in 2012.

Church of Sandavágur

A distinctive red-roofed Lutheran church completed in 1917. The interior houses a 13th-century runestone discovered during construction, which records that Torkil Onundarson from Rogaland was the first settler there.
