Natural Wonders of the Danube

The Danube Gorge, where the river carves through the Carpathian and Balkan mountains, contains a high concentration of karst formations and geological sites. This list features the region's largest subterranean systems, such as Ponicova Cave, alongside historic river-accessible caverns like Veterani. It includes significant peaks like Ciucaru Mare and Boljetinsko brdo, which offer expansive viewpoints over the Kazan Gorges and showcase distinct Cretaceous and Permian rock layers characteristic of the Iron Gates Natural Park.

Ponicova Cave

The largest cave in the Danube Gorge, featuring 1,660 meters of galleries that tunnel through the Ciucaru Mare massif. The cave is accessible by boat from the Danube or via a land trail.
