Historical Sites and Ancient Wonders

Patras and its surroundings preserve layers of history spanning from the Roman era to the Venetian period. This collection features the 6th-century Byzantine castle built on the ancient acropolis, the well-preserved 15th-century fortress at Rio, and significant Roman infrastructure including a stadium, aqueduct, and bridge. Beyond the city center, the list includes the ruins of a 20th-century sanitarium and medieval fortifications that once guarded the routes to the Gulf of Corinth.

Venetian Fortress of Rio

Built by Sultan Bayezid II in 1499 at the entrance of the Gulf of Corinth. It features a moat and was later reinforced by Venetians.

Roman Odeon of Patras

The recently restored odeon, dating back more than 2000 years is the most beautiful sight of Patras.

Kastro Patras

6th-century Byzantine fortification built by Emperor Justinian on the site of the ancient acropolis. It contains remains from Frankish and Ottoman occupations.

Roman Stadium

1st-century AD stadium used for athletic competitions and gladiatorial games during the Roman occupation of Patras.

Roman Aqueduct

2nd-century AD structure that transported water from the springs of Mount Panachaiko to the city's Roman baths and fountains.

Roman bridge

Remains of Roman-era infrastructure near the Meilichos river.

Castle of Patra

Byzantine fortress constructed in the 6th century AD using materials from ancient ruins. It served as the city's primary defense until the 19th century.
