Třeboň

Cittadina · 🇨🇿 Cechia

Třeboň is a small spa town in South Bohemia built almost entirely around water. Hundreds of man-made fish ponds surround it, part of a network created in the Middle Ages that still farms carp today. The whole area is protected as the Třeboňsko Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest wetland landscapes in Central Europe.

The old town sits on the edge of Svět Pond, right beside the historic centre. Inside its walls, visitors find a Renaissance chateau, a complete ring of medieval gates, and narrow cobbled streets that have changed little in centuries. Třeboň has also been a spa destination for more than a hundred years, known for peat baths said to ease joint and muscle pain.

Quando andare

Summers are warm and good for walking or cycling around the ponds. Winters are cold, and many spa hotels offer discounted off-season stays.

Plan around the autumn fish harvest, called výlov, when ponds including Rožmberk Pond are drained and thousands of carp are netted by hand. It runs from September to November and is one of the region's biggest traditions.

Attrazioni principali

  • Třeboň Chateau is the town's centrepiece, a sprawling Renaissance residence that once belonged to the Rosenberg family and later the Schwarzenbergs. Guided tours cover richly decorated rooms and halls, including the old family archive.
  • A short walk from town, Schwarzenberg Tomb is the neo-Gothic burial chapel the Schwarzenberg family built for themselves in a park of its own. Twenty-six family members are buried in the crypt beneath it.
  • Třeboň is one of the few Czech towns to keep its entire ring of medieval gates standing. Svinenská Gate is the oldest and most decorated; Hradecká Gate, Novohradská Gate, and Budějovická Gate complete the set, each still marking an entrance to the old town.
  • Regent Brewery has brewed beer on this site since the 14th century, making it one of the oldest working breweries in the country. Tours cover the historic cellars and end with a tasting.
  • Svět Pond borders the old town, with a flat path circling its shoreline. It was enlarged in the 16th century by the engineer Jakub Krčín, whose monument stands on the dam.
  • A few kilometres north, Rožmberk Pond is the largest fish pond in the country. Its earthen dam and outflow channel are still part of a working fishery.
  • Augustinian Monastery, founded in 1367, stands beside the chateau and still functions as a working monastery. Its Gothic church and cloister are open to visitors on limited days.
  • Bertiny lázně is the older of the town's two historic spa houses, open since 1883 for peat treatments aimed at joint and muscle conditions.

Elenchi in evidenza

Cosa provare

  • Take a peat bath. Lázně Aurora and Bertiny lázně both use local peat, known as slatina, for treatments said to ease joint and muscle pain, a tradition here since the 19th century.
  • Watch the autumn fish harvest. Each year from September to November, ponds including Rožmberk Pond are drained and the carp harvest, called výlov, draws crowds who come to watch the nets pulled in.
  • Cycle, walk, or take a rowing boat out on Svět Pond. A flat path circles the shore, and pedal boats are available in summer.

Gite in giornata

Several worthwhile stops lie within an hour or two of Třeboň, from quiet fishpond villages to one of the country's best-known historic towns.

  • Chlum u Třeboně (about 15 minutes by car) — a small fishpond village with a Baroque church and an easy cycling loop through the Třeboňsko countryside.
  • České Budějovice (about 30 minutes by train or car) — South Bohemia's regional capital, with a large historic square and the Budweiser Budvar brewery.
  • Hluboká nad Vltavou (about 45 minutes by car) — a white, Neo-Gothic chateau modelled partly on Windsor Castle, set above the Vltava river.
  • Český Krumlov (about an hour by car, longer by bus with a change) — a UNESCO World Heritage old town beneath its castle, worth the longer trip.

Cosa esplorare

Several preserved towns in the same district make an easy add-on to a stay in Třeboň.

Jindřichův Hradec, the district's main town, has its own moated castle and historic square, about half an hour away by train. On the fishpond trail itself, Lomnice nad Lužnicí sits on the shore of Rožmberk Pond and makes a good stop on a cycling route. Chlum u Třeboně is another quiet pond-side village worth a short detour. Further south, Nové Hrady has its own Renaissance chateau on the edge of the Novohradské hory hills.

Come arrivare

  • By air: The nearest major airport is Prague (PRG), about 150 km and a 2.5-hour drive away. From the airport, take a bus or train into Prague, then a train south to Třeboň — about 3 hours in total, usually with one change. Linz, in Austria, is closer by distance but has very limited scheduled flights.
  • By train: Třeboň has its own station on the line between České Budějovice (about 30–40 minutes) and Veselí nad Lužnicí, where trains from Prague connect with one change.
  • By bus: Regional and long-distance coaches link Třeboň with České Budějovice and Prague. The bus station is a short walk from the old town.

Come muoversi

  • On foot: The old town is compact enough to see in half a day; most sights are within a 10-minute walk of the main square.
  • Cycling: The flat terrain around the ponds is ideal for cycling. Bikes can be rented in town for day rides into the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area.
  • Regional buses: Useful for reaching nearby villages; pay the driver directly with cash or a contactless card. Look up routes and times with IDOS journey planner, which covers both trains and buses nationwide.

Guidare

  • Is a car worth it?: Not for the old town — it's small and best explored on foot — but useful for reaching nearby villages and the wider Třeboňsko countryside at your own pace.
  • Parking: Paid parking zones sit just outside the old town walls; pay by app or at a machine. Free spaces are available a short walk further out.
  • Restrictions: None specific to Třeboň, though some narrow streets in the historic centre are closed to through traffic.

Cibo e bevande

Třeboň is carp country. Fish raised in the surrounding ponds carries a protected regional name, and it appears fried, smoked, or in soup on menus across town, especially around Christmas and during the autumn harvest season.

Restaurants cluster around the main square and along the path beside Svět Pond, many with pond-view terraces in summer. Pair a fish dish with a Bohemian lager; South Bohemia is beer country as much as fish country.

Sicurezza e salute

Třeboň is a small, low-crime town, and violent crime against tourists is essentially unheard of. The usual precautions apply: keep an eye on bags and bikes during busy summer weekends and the autumn harvest season, when day-trippers fill the old town.

A pharmacy and small hospital serve the town; for anything serious, the nearest larger hospital is in České Budějovice.

Storia

Třeboň grew up around a river crossing and received town rights in the 14th century. The powerful Rosenberg family, based nearby, turned the surrounding wetlands into a vast network of fish ponds starting in the 16th century. Their engineer, Jakub Krčín, enlarged Svět Pond and built up Rožmberk Pond into the largest pond in the country, along with a long gravity-fed canal that still helps feed the system today.

Petr Vok, the last of the Rosenbergs, moved his court and family archive to Třeboň Chateau and died there in 1611. The Schwarzenberg family inherited the estate soon after and held it until 1945, later building the neo-Gothic Schwarzenberg Tomb as their family burial place. The town's medieval gates and the Augustinian Monastery, founded by the Rosenbergs in 1367, survived largely because Třeboň stayed a quiet backwater rather than industrializing.
