Summer (June to August) brings the mildest weather and the long daylight hours the region is known for, though rain is common in any month. Spring and early autumn are quieter and still reasonably mild, while winter is cold, dark, and wet with short days. The town's biggest annual event is the Norwegian Food Festival (Den Norske Matfestivalen), held in mid-August, when the harbor fills with food stalls celebrating Norway's seafood and farm produce.

Expect rain on well over half the days of the year, so pack a good waterproof jacket regardless of season.

Ålesund's sights cluster tightly around its two harbors, so most are within easy walking distance of each other.

Art Nouveau Centre (Jugendstilsenteret) is the best place to start: it explains the 1904 fire and the Art Nouveau rebuilding that followed, set inside Apotekergården, a former pharmacy building from that same rebuilding.

For the view that puts it all in context, climb the 418 steps from Byparken up to Mount Aksla Viewpoint, where the Fjellstua terrace looks out over the rooftops, the surrounding islands, and the Sunnmøre Alps.

Ålesund Church is one of the finest individual Art Nouveau buildings in town, a parish church from 1909 built in concrete and marble, with an interior of frescoes and one of Norway's largest church organs.

Art Museum KUBE occupies a former bank building and focuses on the Jugendstil aesthetic through changing art exhibitions.

Down at the water's edge, the small Ålesund Lighthouse (Molja fyr) marks the harbor entrance and is one of the most photographed spots in town.

A short drive or bus ride from the center, The Atlantic Ocean Park (Atlanterhavsparken) is one of Scandinavia's largest saltwater aquariums, built directly on the rocky shore with views out to the open sea.

For a broader look at the region's history, Sunnmøre Museum is an open-air museum with around 50 historic buildings and a large collection of traditional boats.

Hikers can head up Sukkertoppen on the island of Hessa, a gentler climb than Aksla with equally sweeping fjord views from the top.

A few things in Ålesund are worth doing, not just seeing.

• Hunt for Art Nouveau details. Beyond the well-known facades, dozens of buildings hide carved dragons, turrets, wrought-iron balconies, and datestones from the 1904–1907 rebuilding — a self-guided wander through downtown turns up something new on almost every block.
• Watch the coastal ferry dock. The Hurtigruten or Havila ship easing into the harbor, usually in the evening, is a small daily ritual in Ålesund, as in most towns along this coast.
• Get out on the water. A RIB boat trip or sea kayak paddle out toward the skerries near Atlanterhavsparken is a good way to spot sea eagles, seals, and the coastline from a different angle.

Ålesund's setting among islands and fjords makes it a strong base for day trips, from a short hop across a bridge to a longer run into the fjords.

• Giske — about 25 minutes by car or bus across the island tunnels, home to a 12th-century marble church and quiet beaches.
• Godøya and the Alnes lighthouse — about 40 minutes by car, a scenic drive out to a working lighthouse on the outermost coast, with a café and short coastal walks.
• Molde — about 1 to 1.5 hours by car or express boat across the fjord, known as the "Town of Roses" and for its panoramic view of more than 200 mountain peaks.
• Runde — about 1.5 to 2 hours by car, a bird island with several hundred thousand nesting seabirds, including puffins, on its cliffs from spring into summer.
• Geirangerfjord — about 2.5 hours by car (longer in winter, when the mountain pass over Trollstigen is closed), Norway's most famous fjord and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with waterfalls tumbling straight into the water.

• By air: Ålesund Airport, Vigra sits about 15 km from the center, with scheduled domestic flights to Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim, and a handful of direct routes to other European cities. An airport bus runs into town in around 25–30 minutes; a taxi takes about the same.
• By train: Ålesund has no railway station of its own. The nearest is Åndalsnes, about 2 hours away by road, which connects onto the national network toward Oslo via Dombås.
• By bus: Long-distance coaches connect Ålesund to Trondheim, Bergen, and other regional towns, though journeys are long given the fjord-and-mountain terrain.
• By coastal ferry: The Hurtigruten and Havila coastal ferries call at Ålesund on their route along the Norwegian coast, a scenic (if slow) way to arrive from Bergen or Trondheim.

• On foot: The historic center is compact and flat enough to cover on foot in a couple of hours, though the climb up Aksla is steep. Bridges and tunnels link the surrounding islands, so a car or bus is more practical for reaching them.

• Is a car worth it?: Not needed for the walkable center, but genuinely useful for reaching the islands, fjords, and mountain roads around Ålesund, several of which have limited public transport.
• Parking: Paid parking is available in car parks and on-street around the center, generally paid via app (EasyPark) or a machine at the pay point.
• Restrictions: Ålesund runs its own automatic toll ring (Bypakke Ålesund) on roads into and around town, billed the same way as the national AutoPASS system — no separate action needed if your rental or toll tag is already registered. Mountain routes like Trollstigen close for winter and can be affected by strong coastal winds — check conditions before setting out.

Seafood is the reason to eat well in Ålesund. The town sits at the heart of Norway's stockfish and klippfisk (dried and salted cod) trade, a centuries-old export business that still ships to Portugal, Spain, and Italy, alongside fresh cod, halibut, and shrimp landed daily at the harbor.

For a meal out, head to the restaurants clustered along Brosundet, the narrow canal separating the two halves of the old town, where several seafood-focused places make the most of the harbor setting and Art Nouveau backdrop.

Ålesund is a very safe town for travelers, with petty crime rare even around the harbor and nightlife areas at night. The main risks are weather-related rather than crime-related: conditions on the Sunnmøre Alps and other hiking trails can change quickly, so check the forecast and carry proper gear, and winter driving on coastal roads and bridges can be affected by strong wind and ice.

Ålesund's defining event was a single night in January 1904, when a fire broke out in a fish-processing factory and, driven by strong winds, destroyed nearly the entire wooden town within hours. Around 10,000 residents lost their homes, though remarkably only one person died.

The rebuilding that followed shaped the town seen today. Around fifty Norwegian architects and master builders trained in the Art Nouveau style then popular across Europe designed the new town in stone, brick, and mortar, finishing most of it within three years. German Kaiser Wilhelm II, who took regular cruises to the Norwegian fjords and felt a personal connection to the area, sent four ships carrying food, medicine, and materials for temporary shelter while the town rebuilt — a gesture still marked today by a memorial obelisk, Kaiser Wilhelm II Memorial, near the foot of Aksla.

Ålesund Church, completed in 1909, was among the buildings raised during this rebuilding and remains one of its finest examples.
