Best Beaches and Bays

The Akrotiri peninsula near Chania features a diverse coastline ranging from deep natural harbors to secluded rocky inlets. This selection includes Seitan Limania, a narrow canyon-like cove carved into limestone cliffs, and Stavros Lagoon, famously used as a filming location for Zorba the Greek. Visitors can explore Souda Bay, one of the Mediterranean's largest natural harbors, or find sheltered swimming spots at Loutraki and Machairida, known for their clear waters and views of the Cretan Sea.

Seitan Limania Beach

A narrow, S-shaped inlet flanked by steep limestone cliffs. Access requires a descent via a steep, rocky footpath to reach the turquoise waters and small pebble shore.

Souda Bay

Souda Bay is a bay and natural harbour near the town of Souda on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete.

Stavros Lagune

A circular lagoon at the base of Vardies Mountain, known as the filming site for the 1964 movie Zorba the Greek. The shallow, calm waters are protected from open-sea winds.

Loutraki Beach

A sheltered sandy bay on the southeastern coast of the Akrotiri peninsula. The area features clear, shallow waters and is located near the developed Marathi beach area.

Machairida / Maherida

A secluded rocky cove with a small sandy shore and deep, clear water. The beach is unorganized and frequently used by naturists due to its hidden location behind a limestone ridge.

Kalami Beach

A quiet beach with sand and pebbles overlooking Souda Bay. The site offers views of the 19th-century Itzedin Fortress and the small islet of Souda.
