This selection highlights the archaeological heritage of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It features the UNESCO-listed city of Philippi, known for its Roman forum and early Christian basilicas. On the island of Thasos, the list covers the ancient Agora, the Gate of Zeus and Hera with its preserved reliefs, and the Acropolis overlooking the Aegean. Further east, the ruins of Abdera represent an influential ancient Greek city-state and the birthplace of the philosophers Democritus and Protagoras.
