Historic Sites

Fernando de Noronha’s historical landscape is defined by its 18th-century defensive system and colonial religious architecture. This list features Portuguese fortifications built to secure the archipelago against foreign invasion, including the expansive Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. It also highlights the island’s spiritual heritage through the 1772 Church of Our Lady of Remedies and the Capela de São Pedro, alongside the Aldeia dos Sentenciados, a remnant of the island’s era as a penal colony.

Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Fernando de Noronha

The island’s largest fortification, constructed in 1737 on Dutch ruins. It later served as a political prison during the 20th century.

Church of Our Lady of Remedies

Completed in 1772, this colonial-style church is the island's primary place of worship and a protected national heritage site.

Capela de São Pedro dos Pescadores

A small chapel situated above the port, serving as the focal point for the annual Saint Peter’s festival celebrated by local fishermen.

Aldeia dos Sentenciados

Historical ruins of the residential quarters used to house prisoners during Fernando de Noronha's period as a federal penal colony.

Forte de São José do Morro

Located on an islet near the harbor, these ruins represent the only fortification in the archipelago not situated on the main island.
