Finland is a Nordic country of forests, lakes, and islands, bordering Sweden, Norway, and Russia. It has roughly 188,000 lakes, and thick pine and birch forest covers most of the land outside the cities. Most visitors split their time between Helsinki, a compact and design-focused capital, and the open nature further north, from the lake-filled interior to Lapland's Arctic wilderness.

Finland suits travelers who want calm, well-organized nature trips as much as city breaks. The south, including Helsinki, Turku, and the historic wooden town of Porvoo, holds most of the country's architecture and museums. Lapland, in the north, is built around the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights and reindeer culture in winter. Between the two lies the Finnish Lakeland, a maze of lakes and small towns well suited to slow travel by boat or bike.

Finland is one of the most cash-free countries in Europe — even a bus fare or a public restroom is usually paid by card or phone. Keep a little cash only for small unstaffed stalls, such as roadside berry or mushroom sellers, that have no card reader. ATMs are easy to find in every town.

팁 문화

Tipping is not part of Finnish culture. Prices already include service, and staff do not expect anything extra.

  • Restaurants: rounding up the bill is fine but never required.
  • Taxis: no tip expected; fares are metered and fixed.
  • Hotels: porters and housekeeping do not expect tips.
  • Tour guides: a small tip is a nice gesture after an especially good tour, not an obligation.

전원 및 전압

Finland uses Type C and F plugs at 230 V / 50 Hz — the standard continental European sockets. Most phone and laptop chargers already handle this voltage, so only travelers from outside Europe typically need an adapter.

언어

Finnish and Swedish are both official languages; about 5% of the population, concentrated on the west and south coasts and in the Åland Islands, speaks Swedish as a first language. Finnish is unrelated to Swedish or English, so words are hard to guess from context. English is spoken fluently by almost everyone working in tourism and hospitality, and by most people under about 60.

인터넷 및 통신

Prepaid SIM and eSIM plans are sold at kiosks, supermarkets, and phone shops. Most operators require a passport or other photo ID to register the SIM, so bring it along when buying one. Network coverage is strong even outside the main cities, reaching deep into Lapland's national parks. It can still drop out on remote hiking trails, so download offline maps before heading into the backcountry.

안전 및 응급 상황

Finland is consistently ranked among the world's safest countries, and violent crime against tourists is rare. The main risks are practical, not violent: icy pavements in winter, and petty theft of unattended bags in busy Helsinki spots like the market square or the central railway station. One number covers every emergency.

건강 및 의료

Tap water is among the best in the world and safe to drink everywhere in Finland. In the wilderness, boiling or filtering water from lakes and streams is still the safer choice unless you know the source is clean. Pharmacies (apteekki) are well stocked and easy to find in any town, marked with a green cross. No special vaccinations are required for entry, and standard travel health precautions apply.

비자 및 입국

Finland is part of the Schengen Area. Citizens of the EU, EEA, and a long list of other countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan, can enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Travelers from countries without a visa-free agreement need a Schengen visa arranged in advance.

Visa and entry requirements change frequently. Verify current requirements with the official immigration authority or your country's embassy before travel.

에티켓

  • Personal space and quiet: Finns value calm, direct conversation and are comfortable with silence — it isn't rude, and small talk with strangers is unusual.
  • Sauna manners: saunas are a normal, near-daily ritual, not a spa luxury. Public saunas are usually gender-separated and nude; swimwear is common at mixed or tourist-oriented ones — follow the rules posted at each venue.
  • Punctuality: arriving on time, for both social plans and business meetings, matters more than in many other countries.
  • Shoes off: it is customary to remove your shoes when entering someone's home.
  • Nature access: Finland's right to roam, known locally as jokamiehenoikeus, lets anyone walk, ski, or pick berries on most land, even privately owned, as long as you keep your distance from houses and leave no trace.

공휴일 및 영업 시간

Many businesses close or run reduced hours around Christmas and Midsummer, when much of the country leaves for lakeside cabins for a week or more.

Sunday hours are shorter than on weekdays, and small towns can feel quiet outside normal shopping hours; late-night pharmacies and supermarkets are mostly a Helsinki-area option.

교통편 및 이동 방법

  • By train: VR's rail network connects all major cities and is comfortable and punctual; book ahead for the cheapest fares on long routes such as the Helsinki–Rovaniemi overnight sleeper train. VR – Finnish Railways
  • By air: domestic flights from Helsinki save significant time to Lapland destinations like Rovaniemi compared with the long train ride north.
  • By bus: long-distance coaches reach towns the rail network skips and are often cheaper than the train.
  • By ferry: regular ferries link the mainland to the Åland Islands and the southwest archipelago; around Helsinki, ferries and water buses are part of the regular public transit network.

운전

  • Key rules: headlights must stay on at all times, even in daylight. Winter tires are required whenever winter conditions are on the road, typically from November to March. Drink-driving limits are strict, at 0.05%.
  • Tolls: Finland has no road tolls or vignettes — all roads, including motorways, are free to use.
  • Parking: metered street parking is common in city centers, usually paid by app or machine; blue "P" signs mark public car parks.
  • Fuel: nearly all stations are self-service, and most accept card payment at the pump around the clock, even when unstaffed. Petrol is sold as 95E10 or 98E5; diesel as Diesel or Diesel+.
  • Electric vehicles: charging points are common along main routes and in city car parks; apps such as Virta and Fortum Charge & Drive cover most networks.

음식 및 음료

Finnish food centers on what the land and lakes provide: rye bread, freshwater fish, wild berries, and forest mushrooms. Breakfast is usually simple, such as rye or oat porridge, bread, and coffee, while lunch is the main hot meal of the day for most working Finns, typically a set-price buffet at a cafeteria or restaurant between 11:00 and 14:00.

Reindeer, especially in Lapland, and freshwater fish such as salmon, pike-perch, and vendace appear on menus throughout the country, often smoked or cured rather than fried. Coffee culture runs deep — Finland has some of the highest coffee consumption per person in the world — and a coffee break with a cardamom bun is a daily habit for many people.

추천 여행 지역

The south and southwest coast holds most of Finland's historic architecture: Helsinki, the design-focused capital; Turku, Finland's oldest city and the gateway to a vast archipelago; the wooden old town of Porvoo; and the UNESCO-listed old town of Rauma.

The Finnish Lakeland, the country's interior, is a slow-travel region of lakes and small towns: Savonlinna, home to a medieval castle and a summer opera festival; Kuopio; and Jyväskylä, known for its Alvar Aalto architecture.

Lapland, in the Arctic north, centers on Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus and the region's main gateway, and Inari, a center of Sámi culture. Ski resorts such as Levi Ski Resort draw winter visitors for downhill skiing and northern lights viewing.

Elsewhere, Oulu is the unofficial capital of the north coast, and the Swedish-speaking Mariehamn anchors the Åland Islands, a quieter archipelago between Finland and Sweden.
