Religious Heritage

Gubbio’s religious landscape is defined by its deep connection to Saint Francis and its patron, Saint Ubaldo. This collection features the 12th-century Cathedral with its striking pointed arches and the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, which overlooks the city from Mount Ingino and houses the saint's incorrupt body. The trail includes sites marking the legendary taming of the wolf, such as San Francesco della Pace, and the 13th-century Chiesa di San Francesco, built on the grounds of the family who sheltered Francis after his departure from Assisi.

Cattedrale dei Santi Mariano e Giacomo

A 12th-century Gothic cathedral featuring a single nave supported by ten massive pointed arches. It houses the relics of martyrs Mariano and Giacomo and contains 16th-century frescoes and a late-Gothic wooden crucifix.

San Francesco della Pace

This church stands where the wolf of Gubbio allegedly lived after being tamed by Saint Francis. It contains the stone slab used as the wolf’s burial site and a 16th-century wooden statue of the saint.

Chiesa di San Francesco

A 13th-century Gothic church constructed on the former estate of the Spadalonga family, who sheltered Saint Francis. The interior features a significant cycle of 15th-century frescoes by Ottaviano Nelli depicting the life of the Virgin.
