Ladakh's Buddhist Gompas

Ladakh’s spiritual landscape is defined by its ancient gompas, many perched on dramatic rocky outcrops overlooking the Indus Valley. This collection spans centuries of Buddhist heritage, featuring architectural marvels like the 12-story Thikse Monastery and the 17th-century Hemis Gompa, the region's wealthiest. Highlights include Alchi’s rare 11th-century Indo-Tibetan wall paintings and the white-domed Shanti Stupa. These sites represent various schools of Tibetan Buddhism, housing significant collections of ancient manuscripts, thangkas, and colossal statues of Maitreya Buddha.

Thikse Monastery

Thiksey Monastery or Thiksey Gompa is a Buddhist monastery affiliated with the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Hemis Gompa

Hemis Monastery is a Himalayan Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa Lineage, in Hemis on the bank of the Indus River, Ladakh, India.

Shanti Stupa

A white-domed Buddhist stupa built in 1991 by Japanese and Ladakhi Buddhists to promote world peace. It houses relics of the Buddha at its base and features gilded panels depicting scenes from his life.

Namgyal Tsemo tower and chapel

Founded in 1430 by King Tashi Namgyal, this complex sits prominently above Leh Palace. It is home to a three-story-high golden statue of Maitreya Buddha, ancient manuscripts, and well-preserved frescoes.

Korzok, དཀོར་མཛོད་ is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery belonging to the Drukpa Lineage.

Alchi Gompa

An 11th-century monastic complex renowned for its unique Indo-Tibetan murals and wood carvings that reflect Kashmiri artistic influence. Unlike most Ladakhi gompas, it is situated on flat ground near the Indus River.
