Historic Churches & Monasteries

Lori Province contains some of Armenia's most significant religious architecture, dating from the 5th to the 13th centuries. The region is home to the UNESCO-listed Haghpat Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval Armenian engineering, and the 6th-century Odzun Basilica, one of the oldest domed churches in the country. Many of these sites, such as Akhtala and Kobayr, are noted for their rare 13th-century frescoes and unique positions along the cliffs of the Debed River canyon, reflecting the intersection of spiritual life and defensive fortification.
