Walk through the centre of Manchester and meet the landmarks that shaped it: a Roman fort, the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station, grand Victorian civic buildings, a green heart at Piccadilly Gardens, a medieval cathedral and the home of football. The walk starts at the reconstructed Roman fort in Castlefield, a short walk from the Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop, and finishes at the Royal Exchange in St Ann's Square. Nine stops over about 3.9 km of flat ground, and several of the buildings are free to step inside. Cotton, protest and invention are the threads that connect them.

Starting at Westminster Abbey — coronation church of English monarchs for a thousand years — the route passes Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Churchill's secret wartime bunker, Saint James's Park, and Buckingham Palace, before opening onto Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, and the free treasures of the British Museum. About four kilometres, roughly two hours including stops. The walk starts at Westminster Underground station, steps from Westminster Abbey's west door.

Best of Edinburgh: The Royal Mile & Old Town

Walk the spine of Edinburgh's Old Town, starting at the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle and descending the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with detours to Victoria Street and the National Museum of Scotland (with a bonus track on Greyfriars Bobby, whose statue you pass on the way), and the hidden Blair Street Vaults and Dunbar's Close Garden along the way. The walk finishes with a stroll into Holyrood Park itself, to the loch at the foot of Arthur's Seat. Start at the Castle Esplanade, an easy walk up from Princes Street or a short ride to the top of the Royal Mile.
