Meknes Essentials

Meknes, one of Morocco's four Imperial cities, flourished under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. This UNESCO World Heritage site is defined by its massive defensive walls and monumental gates, most notably the intricate Bab Mansour. The city's architectural legacy includes the expansive Heri es-Souani royal stables, the tilework of the Bou Inania Madrasa, and the vast Agdal reservoir. Within the medina, Lahdim Square serves as the central hub, leading to the Dar Jamai museum and the subterranean Kara Prison, offering a focused look at Morocco’s Alawite history.

A massive 17th-century architectural feat designed to house 12,000 royal horses. The site features thick stone walls and high vaulted ceilings originally used for grain storage and temperature control.
