Ancient Sites & Ruins

Ohrid’s archaeological landscape spans from prehistoric settlements to Byzantine masterpieces. This collection features the 200 BC Hellenistic theatre and the reconstructed Bay of Bones pile-dwelling settlement on Lake Ohrid. Religious history is preserved through the 11th-century frescoes of the Church of St. Sophia and the mosaics of Plaoshnik. These sites represent the ancient city of Lychnidos and the region's evolution into a significant cultural and spiritual center of the Balkans.

Bay of Bones

Reconstructed prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age featuring stilt houses and an archaeological museum. The complex also includes a conserved Roman castrum and facilities for underwater tourism.

Lihnid

Ancient Greek and Roman city that served as the precursor to modern Ohrid. It was a major center along the Via Egnatia, featuring remains of fortifications and urban infrastructure dating back to the 4th century BC.

Bazilika "Sveti Erazmo"

Ruins of an Early Christian basilica dating from the 4th to 6th centuries. The site includes remains of an early Christian necropolis and is dedicated to St. Erasmus, who is credited with introducing Christianity to the region.
