Landmarks of Oman

Oman’s architectural and natural heritage spans from the Bronze Age to the 19th century. This collection highlights UNESCO-listed mud-brick fortifications like Bahla Fort and the ancient maritime hub of Qalhat. It also features unique geological formations, including the white sands of the Sugar Dunes and the record-breaking height of Ramlat Jadilah. From the historical telegraph stations in Musandam to the seasonal blowholes of Salalah, these landmarks represent the Sultanate’s diverse geography and strategic historical importance.

Bahla Fort

A 13th-century mud-brick fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site. It features massive defensive walls, towers, and a mosque, illustrating the medieval power of the Banu Nebhan tribe.

Old Qalhat (archeological site)

UNESCO-listed archaeological site containing the ruins of a major 11th to 15th-century trading port. The Mausoleum of Bibi Maryam remains its most prominent standing structure.

Mnart alyjt

A white-washed tower overlooking Sur’s harbor. It provides views of the traditional dhow-building yards and the entrance to the lagoon.

Telegraph Island

A small limestone island in the Musandam fjords. It housed a British repeater station in the 1860s used to boost telegraph signals between London and Karachi.

Beehive Tomb

Bronze Age stone burial structures dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. These dry-stone masonry tombs are characteristic of the Hafit period.

Blowholes

Located at Mughsail Beach, these natural limestone vents force seawater upward into high fountains during the Khareef (monsoon) season.

Fort Jalan Bani Bu Hassan

A restored 19th-century fortification featuring a circular central keep and thick defensive walls, once used to protect the surrounding oasis.

Ramlat Jadilah - Highest dune of Oman

Situated in the Rub' al Khali desert, this is the highest sand dune in Oman, reaching an elevation of approximately 455 meters.

Sugar Dunes

Stark white sand dunes located near Al Khaluf that contrast sharply with the adjacent coastline of the Arabian Sea.

Resistance Monument

A monument commemorating the local defense against the Portuguese naval invasion in 1507. It is located near the coastal border area.
