Historic Fortifications

Peschiera del Garda’s military history is defined by its UNESCO-listed pentagonal fortress and a strategic network of 19th-century Austrian fortifications. This collection covers the evolution of the town's defenses, from the Roman remains of Arilica to the well-preserved Forte Ardietti and the twin Salvi forts built to guard the western approaches. These structures highlight the architectural transition from Venetian bastions to the sophisticated masonry of the Habsburg Quadrilateral defense system.

Forte Ardietti

An exceptionally well-preserved Austrian fort built between 1853 and 1861. Part of the Quadrilateral defense system, it features original masonry, gunpowder magazines, and defensive moats used to secure the southern frontier.

Forte Salvi nuovo

A mid-19th-century Austrian fortification designed to reinforce the western defensive line. It represents typical Habsburg military engineering, built to support the older Salvi battery in protecting the road to Brescia.

Forte San Marco

A military structure integrated into the fortress's defensive circuit, serving as a strategic lookout and artillery position guarding the entrance to the Mincio River.

Forte Salvi vecchio

The older of the two Salvi forts, this 19th-century Austrian military outpost was constructed to provide long-range artillery cover for the western approach to the walled city.
