• Milford Sound (a long full day, around 4 to 4.5 hours' drive each way, or about 45 minutes by scenic flight): New Zealand's most famous fiord, reached through Fiordland National Park. Most visitors join a coach or fly-and-cruise tour rather than driving both ways in a day.

• By air: Queenstown Airport has direct domestic flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, plus seasonal direct flights from Australia. The airport is about 8 km from the town center; a taxi or shuttle takes 10 to 15 minutes, and public buses also run the route.
