Historic Churches of Saaremaa

Saaremaa's religious landscape is defined by massive 13th-century stone fort-churches and colorful 19th-century Orthodox sanctuaries. This collection includes Valjala, the oldest stone church in Estonia, and Karja, famous for its unique pagan-influenced stone carvings. It also features the Reomäe nunnery and several Orthodox churches built during the conversion movement of the 1840s, showcasing the island's transition from medieval Catholicism to Lutheranism and Russian Orthodoxy.
