Historic Churches and Ruins

Visby’s UNESCO-listed cityscape is defined by its concentration of medieval religious architecture. Visby Cathedral

Visby Cathedral, formally Visby Saint Mary's Cathedral, is a cathedral within the Church of Sweden, seat of the Bishop of Visby.

St. Katarina Ruins

Listed as UNESCO heritage, these medieval church ruins are symbol of the glorious history of the city.

St. Nicolai Ruin

Another major ruin listed by UNESCO which history reaches back to the 12th century. Having a great acoustics, it hosts numerous concerts.

Sankt Hans och Sankt Pers kyrkoruiner

These two adjacent ruins represent some of Visby's oldest religious sites. St. Hans dates to the late 11th century, while St. Per was added in the 13th century. They historically served as the main parish churches for the town's Nordic population.

Drottens kyrkoruin

Also known as the Church of the Holy Trinity, this 13th-century ruin features distinct Byzantine-influenced architecture. It was originally built as a parish church during the height of Visby's Hanseatic prosperity.

St. Lawrence Ruin

Saint Lars Church ruin is located in the central part of Visby on the island of Gotland, Sweden.

Sankt Görans kyrkoruin

Located north of the city walls, this 13th-century church was built to serve a hospital and leper colony. Its isolated position reflects its historical function as a specialized medical and religious facility situated outside the main settlement.
