Lithuanian Hillforts

These five hillforts, known locally as piliakalniai, represent the medieval defensive heritage of the Birštonas region along the Nemunas river loops. Ranging from the prominent Vytautas Hill to the strategic embankments at Paverkniai and Norkūnai, these archaeological sites served as vital fortifications against Teutonic raids between the 1st and 14th centuries. Each site features characteristic steep slopes and man-made earthworks that offer insights into the early military architecture and settlement patterns of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Birštono piliakalnis

Also known as Vytautas Hill, this site on the right bank of the Nemunas served as a crucial defensive fortification against Teutonic Order raids during the 14th century. It is one of the highest and steepest hillforts in Lithuania.

Nemajūnų piliakalnis

An archaeological site located northeast of Nemajūnai village, featuring a traditional defensive mound characteristic of the medieval landscape in the Birštonas eldership.

Paverknių piliakalnis

Situated near the confluence of the Verknė and Nemunas rivers, this site consists of a defensive mound and remnants of an ancient settlement dating back to the first millennium.

Šilėnų piliakalnis

Locally known as Aštrusis kalnas (Sharp Hill), this fortification is located north of Šaltinėnai and served as a strategic observation and defensive point.

Norkūnų I piliakalnis

A complex featuring a hillfort and an adjacent ancient settlement site located west of Norkūnai, providing archaeological evidence of early residential and defensive structures in the Prienai district.
