Burundi

Land · Afrika

Burundi is a small, landlocked country of steep green hills on the north-east shore of Lake Tanganyika. Few tourists come here. Those who do find lake beaches near the old capital, Bujumbura Mairie, tea and coffee hills, waterfalls and the southernmost source of the Nile. The royal drummers of Burundi are famous around the world, and you can see them perform near Gitega, the political capital since 2019.

Check official advice before you plan anything. The US government rates Burundi at Level 3 ("Reconsider travel") and says do not travel to Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces and Kibira National Park. The UK government advises against all travel to Mugina, Cibitoke, Bukinyayana, Bubanza and Mpanda communes, to parts of Ntahangwa commune including Rusizi National Park, and to the RN6 and RN10 roads through Kibira National Park. The land border with Rwanda is closed, and severe fuel shortages limit travel. Burundi suits experienced travelers who arrange transport and a guide in advance. See the safety section for details.

Geld en betalen

Burundi is largely a cash society. Outside Bujumbura, cards are rarely accepted and there are few ATMs, so do not rely on cash withdrawals.

  • Bring US dollars: carry clean notes printed after 2006. Notes that are older or have small tears are usually refused.
  • Exchange rates: foreign currency is scarce. An unofficial exchange rate exists, and it can be very different from the official rate. Change money only at banks and licensed exchange bureaus, and ask your hotel for current advice.
  • Cash limits: you may bring in or take out up to USD 10,000.
  • Budget: hotels, car hire with a driver and fuel make up most of the cost of a trip. Local food and markets are cheap.

Fooien

Tipping is not part of everyday life for most Burundians, but it is welcome in tourism. Guides, drivers and drummers who perform for visitors appreciate a cash tip at the end of the visit. In hotels and restaurants used by visitors, a small tip for good service is normal. Pay tips in Burundian francs.

Burundi has three official languages: Kirundi, French and English. Almost everyone speaks Kirundi. French is the main language of government, business and hotels, so some French is very useful. English is less common, although staff in larger hotels usually speak some. Swahili is widely used in Bujumbura's markets and in trade.

Mobiel bereik en internet

  • SIM cards: Lumitel is the largest mobile network. Buy a SIM at an operator shop and bring your passport to register it.
  • Coverage: mobile data works in Bujumbura and the main towns. Coverage is weaker in the hills and national parks.

Veiligheid en noodgevallen

Check official travel advice before you book and again before you leave. The US government rates Burundi at Level 3 ("Reconsider travel") because of political violence, crime, health risks and limited medical care. It says do not travel to:

  • Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces and Kibira National Park, where armed groups use the forested border areas with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
  • The former Central Market on Chaussée Prince Louis Rwagasore in Bujumbura, because of grenade attacks and armed robbery.

The UK government advises against all travel to:

  • Mugina, Cibitoke, Bukinyayana, Bubanza and Mpanda communes in Bujumbura Province.
  • Parts of Ntahangwa commune: the RN5 road north of Bujumbura's airport towards Cibitoke, and the area west of the Rusizi river towards the DRC border, including Rusizi National Park.
  • The main RN6 and RN10 roads that run west from Kayanza through Kibira National Park towards Cibitoke.

Armed group activity along the DRC border has increased. The land border with Rwanda has been closed since January 2024, but flights between Bujumbura and Kigali still run. The border with Tanzania is open.

  • Crime: armed robbery, carjacking, bag snatching and burglary happen, including in central Bujumbura. Do not walk or use public transport after dark.
  • Roads: avoid driving outside Bujumbura after dark. Police control entry to and exit from Bujumbura at night, and roadblocks are common. Carry a copy of your passport and visa.
  • Fuel: severe fuel shortages mean transport can stop at short notice. Do not assume you can buy fuel.
  • Lake Tanganyika: avoid swimming because of hippos, crocodiles and waterborne diseases.
  • Laws: same-sex sexual acts are illegal.

Gezondheid

  • Yellow fever: you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Burundi.
  • Malaria: malaria is present across the country. Ask a travel clinic about antimalarial tablets, and use repellent and a mosquito net.
  • Other vaccinations: see a travel clinic at least 8 weeks before the trip.
  • Water: tap water is not safe to drink. Drink bottled or treated water.
  • Medical care: facilities are very limited, even in Bujumbura. Bring the medicines you need, and buy travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.

Visa en inreisvoorwaarden

Most visitors need a visa. Apply online before you travel through the Burundi immigration service. You receive a validation certificate, which you print and show at Bujumbura's airport, where the visa is issued.

  • Tourist visa: a one-month visa costs USD 90. Pay online, or in cash when you arrive. Do not travel without the validation certificate.
  • East African Community (EAC) citizens: can get an entry visa free of charge.
  • Passport: it must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival, with one blank page.
  • Yellow fever: carry your vaccination certificate. You will be asked for it on arrival.
  • Land borders: the border with Rwanda is closed. Most visitors arrive by air.

Visa and entry requirements change frequently. Verify current requirements with the official immigration authority or your country's embassy before travel.

Etiquette

  • Greetings: always greet people before you ask a question. A handshake is normal, and greetings can be long and polite.
  • Dress: dress modestly, especially outside Bujumbura and in churches. Cover shoulders and knees.
  • Photography: it is illegal to photograph government buildings, military sites, airports and border posts, including with a drone. Ask before you photograph people.
  • Politics: politics is a sensitive topic. Avoid political discussions and stay away from demonstrations.
  • Drummers: drum performances are a sacred tradition. Ask your guide about photography and tips before the show starts.
  • Public affection: Burundi is socially conservative. Avoid public displays of affection.

Feestdagen en openingstijden

On public holidays, government offices and banks close.

Shops and offices usually open from about 8:00 until late afternoon, and many close on Sunday. Churches are full on Sunday mornings.

Vervoer ter plaatse

Burundi is small, but roads are slow and fuel shortages can stop transport at short notice. Travel only in daylight and plan each day's fuel in advance.

  • By car with driver: the best way to travel. Hotels and local agencies arrange a car and driver. A 4x4 helps on unpaved roads in the rainy season.
  • By minibus: shared minibuses link Bujumbura with the main towns. They are cheap but crowded, and road safety is poor.
  • In Bujumbura: taxis are the safest option, especially after dark. Agree the fare before you ride.
  • By air: there are no regular domestic flights. The only international airport is in Bujumbura.

Autorijden

  • Licence: you can drive for 6 months with a UK photocard licence. Other visitors should carry an International Driving Permit.
  • Road conditions: only a few roads are paved, and some of them are in poor condition. Landslides often block roads after heavy rain.
  • Checkpoints: police roadblocks are common, and not always official. Carry your passport, visa and car papers.
  • Night driving: avoid driving outside Bujumbura after dark. Drink-driving is a serious offence.
  • Restricted roads: do not drive the RN5 north of Bujumbura's airport towards Cibitoke, or the RN6 and RN10 west from Kayanza through Kibira National Park.
  • Fuel: severe shortages are common, with long lines at stations. Petrol is sold as essence and diesel as gasoil. Pay in cash.
  • Electric vehicles: there is no public charging network.

Eten en drinken

Burundian food is simple and filling. Most families eat beans every day, with cooking bananas, sweet potatoes, cassava or rice. Ubugali, a stiff dough of cassava or maize flour, comes with a sauce of beans, vegetables or fish. Lunch is the main meal, and many local restaurants serve a buffet plate.

Fish from Lake Tanganyika is the highlight. Try mukeke, a lake perch that is grilled or fried, and ndagala, small fried fish sold at markets. Goat brochettes, grilled meat on a stick, are the favourite evening snack at bars, often with fried plantains or potatoes. Primus is the national beer. Traditional drinks include banana beer and sorghum beer, which people share at celebrations. Burundi also grows good coffee and tea.
