Hiking Huts in Fiordland

Fiordland National Park contains an extensive network of backcountry huts managed by the Department of Conservation. This selection spans the iconic Kepler and Hollyford Tracks, as well as the remote Dusky Track. These shelters provide essential accommodation ranging from Great Walk facilities with heating and solar power to basic wilderness outposts. They are strategically positioned to allow access to the region's glacial valleys, alpine lakes, and temperate rainforests.

Moturau Hut

Located on the shores of Lake Manapouri along the Kepler Track. This Great Walk hut features 40 bunks, heating, and solar lighting. Bookings are mandatory during the peak season.

Lake Alabaster Hut

A 26-bunk standard hut situated on the Hollyford Track near the junction with the Pyke-Big Bay route, offering views across the lake to the Skippers Range.

Hidden Falls Hut

The first hut on the Hollyford Track, located near a 25-meter waterfall. It provides 12 bunks and serves as a primary stop for hikers heading toward Lake McKerrow.

McKellar Hut

Positioned at the upper Hollyford Valley near Lake McKellar. This 28-bunk hut sits at the junction connecting the Hollyford Track with the Routeburn Track.

Waitutu Hut

A 12-bunk hut on the South Coast Track, located near the mouth of the Waitutu River with views of the Southern Ocean and the Waitutu Forest.

Port Craig School Hut

Housed in a preserved 1920s school building from the historic Port Craig sawmilling settlement. It serves hikers on the South Coast and Hump Ridge tracks.

Lake Roe Hut

A remote 12-bunk shelter on the Dusky Track. It is situated in an alpine basin at 1,100 meters, providing access to the Lake Roe circuit.

Green Lake Hut

A 12-bunk hut on the shoreline of a large sub-alpine lake. It is accessible via the Borland Road or the track from Lake Monowai.

Hokuri Hut

Located on the Hollyford Track along the edge of Lake McKerrow. This modern 12-bunk hut was built to replace an older structure affected by a landslip.

Demon Trail Hut

A basic 12-bunk hut on the Hollyford Track, positioned midway along the rocky 'Demon Trail' section overlooking Lake McKerrow.

Shallow Bay Hut

A small, basic 6-bunk hut on the sandy shores of Lake Manapouri. It offers a rustic alternative to the nearby Moturau Hut on the Kepler Track.

West Arm Hut

Situated at the West Arm of Lake Manapouri near the Manapouri Power Station. It serves as a transit point for the Wilmot Pass and the Dusky Track.

Rodger Inlet Hut

A 6-bunk hut on the western shores of Lake Monowai, accessible by boat or a bush track. It is a popular base for fishing and hunting.

Kintail Hut

A 12-bunk remote shelter on the Dusky Track, located in the upper Seaforth River valley near the base of Centre Pass.

Upper Spey Hut

Positioned at the head of the Spey River on the Dusky Track. This 12-bunk hut provides shelter before the steep ascent over Wilmot Pass.
