Fontainebleau, known to climbers as "Bleau," is the world’s premier bouldering destination. This vast forest contains thousands of sandstone boulders organized into color-coded circuits that cater to every skill level, from beginners to elite athletes. The rock is renowned for its fine-grained texture and technical demands, requiring precise footwork and sloper grip strength. These fifteen spots represent the forest's most iconic sectors, including the historical birthplace of the sport at Bas Cuvier and the expansive, sandy plateaus of Apremont and Franchard.
Bas Cuvier
The historical birthplace of modern bouldering. It features highly polished but iconic problems and a high concentration of classic circuits ranging from beginner to professional grades.
Rocher Canon
Located near the Bois-le-Roi train station, this sector offers diverse circuits on quality sandstone. It is one of the quickest areas in the forest to dry after rain.
Franchard Isatis
A premier sector known for high-quality rock and technical problems. It features a wide range of difficulties and remains one of the forest's most popular and accessible areas.
Apremont
A vast, sandy sector featuring diverse boulders and the famous "l'Alchimiste" problem. It is known for its scenic landscape, high density of problems, and varied climbing styles.
Cuisinière
Renowned for technical climbing on pristine sandstone. It offers several high-standard circuits and is a favorite for experienced climbers seeking precision and technical slopers.
Franchard Druides
A quieter alternative to nearby Isatis, featuring technical slabs and steep walls. The rock is generally well-preserved and less polished than the more central sectors.
Cuvier Ouest
An extension of the Bas Cuvier area offering similar rock quality with slightly less traffic. It features technical problems across all grades in a classic forest setting.
Franchard Hauts Sablons
An elevated sector offering panoramic views and high-quality boulders. It is known for its airy atmosphere and distinctive sandstone formations.
Apremont Butte aux Peintres
Located near Barbizon, this area combines historical artistic significance with technical bouldering circuits on large sandstone blocks set among picturesque trees.
