Riyadh is hot for most of the year, so plan around the cooler months. Winter, from December to February, is mild and pleasant. Spring and autumn are warm but manageable, while summer, from May to September, brings extreme heat that makes outdoor sightseeing hard in the middle of the day.

Plan around Riyadh Season if you can. It is the country's biggest entertainment festival, running from October to March with concerts, sports events, and themed zones across the city.

At-Turaif District in ad-Dir'iyah is a mudbrick citadel that was the birthplace of the first Saudi state and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010. Wander its restored towers and alleys, then stop at the restaurants built into the old walls next door.

Al Masmak Palace is the clay fort where Abdulaziz Ibn Saud recaptured Riyadh in 1902, an event that set off the unification of Saudi Arabia. Local accounts say marks from that battle are still visible on one of its doors.

National Museum of Saudi Arabia covers the country's history from prehistory to the present, and is a good first stop for context before exploring the rest of the city.

Murabba Palace was the residence and seat of government for King Abdulaziz from 1938 until his death, and shows how the city's rulers lived just as oil wealth began transforming the country.

Kingdom Centre is Riyadh's best-known skyscraper, with a sky bridge near the top that gives a panoramic view over the whole city, especially at sunset.

Imam Turki bin Abdullah Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the city center and a working place of worship; non-Muslim visitors should admire it from outside prayer times.

Royal Saudi Air Force Museum displays retired Saudi air force jets and transport planes in open-air and hangar exhibits, a good stop for aviation fans.

• Join Riyadh Season in winter, when Boulevard Riyadh City and other themed zones around the city fill with concerts, food stalls, and pop-up rides that run from October to March.
• Catch a Saudi Pro League football match. Riyadh's two biggest clubs, Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, draw passionate crowds and are easy to watch even if you don't follow the league closely.
• Spend a night camping in the desert outside the city. Renting a tent for a weekend under clear skies is a common local ritual, especially from November to March when nights are cool.

Riyadh sits in open desert, so a rental car or a private driver opens up dramatic scenery within a few hours.

• Wadi Namar – about 30 minutes by car south of the center. A dam and an artificial waterfall sit inside a green canyon park, a popular short escape from the city.
• Thumamah National Park – about an hour north by car. Red sand dunes, acacia trees, and free desert campsites make this a favorite weekend spot for dune driving and picnics.
• Edge of the World – about 1.5 to 2 hours northwest by car. Cliffs drop hundreds of meters to the desert floor, and the final stretch needs a four-wheel-drive vehicle or a local guide.

• By air: King Khalid International Airport (RUH) is the main gateway, about 35 km north of the city center, with flights from across the world. The Riyadh Metro's Yellow Line runs from all terminals to the city center in about 30 minutes; taxis and ride-hailing take 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.
• By train: Riyadh Railway Station serves the line to Dammam and the Eastern Province. Trains north to Qassim and Hail leave from a separate station, Riyadh North.
• By bus: Long-distance coaches run from Riyadh's bus terminals to major Saudi cities, including Jeddah and other cities across the country.

• Taxi and ride-hailing: Uber and Careem operate throughout the city and are the easiest way to reach places the metro doesn't cover.
• On foot: Riyadh is built for cars, with wide roads and long blocks between destinations. Walk within a single district, such as around Al Masmak Palace or Kingdom Centre, and use transit or a taxi between them, especially in summer heat.

• Is a car worth it?: Not for a short stay in the city center, where the metro and taxis cover everything. A car is useful for day trips into the desert, since public transit doesn't reach places like Thumamah National Park or the Edge of the World.
• Parking: Malls and major hotels have free or low-cost parking. Street parking in busy districts like Olaya is limited during the day.
• Restrictions: There is no congestion charge or low-emission zone in Riyadh.

Riyadh's food scene mixes traditional Najdi dishes with a fast-growing restaurant and cafe culture, especially around Tahlia Street and the Olaya district.

For a traditional meal, Najd Village serves classic Najdi dishes like kabsa and jareesh in a setting built to resemble an old Saudi village. For something more modern, the cafes and restaurants clustered around Tahlia Street cover everything from international chains to homegrown Saudi brands, and stay busy well into the night.

Riyadh is a safe city for tourists, with low rates of violent crime and petty theft. The most common issues are aggressive driving and heavy traffic, so take extra care crossing streets outside marked crossings.

Dress modestly in public: shoulders and knees covered, though women are not legally required to wear an abaya or headscarf outside religious sites. Some shops and restaurants pause briefly around Friday midday prayers, so build in a little slack if you are shopping or eating around midday on Fridays.

Keep some cash on hand. Card acceptance is common in malls and restaurants, but many small shops, taxis, and street vendors still expect cash.

Riyadh's story as a modern capital begins in 1902, when a young Abdulaziz Ibn Saud led a small raiding party back from exile in Kuwait and recaptured Al Masmak Palace from a rival garrison. That single raid launched the campaign that unified Saudi Arabia three decades later, and the fort still stands in the middle of the old city.

Riyadh's older roots lie a short drive away at At-Turaif District in ad-Dir'iyah, the mudbrick capital of the first Saudi state, founded in 1727 and destroyed in 1818 before being restored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As Riyadh grew through the 20th century, King Abdulaziz moved his court to Murabba Palace in 1938, and the city has kept expanding outward ever since, from a walled desert town to a metropolis of more than seven million people.
