Buddhist Temples

Seoraksan National Park houses several significant Buddhist sites that reflect Korea's spiritual heritage. Sinheungsa serves as the head temple of the Jogye Order, featuring the massive bronze Tongil Daebul statue. Higher up, Gyejoam is a unique cave hermitage situated beneath the Heundeulbawi rocking stone. Bongjeongam, the highest pilgrimage site in the park at 1,244 meters, enshrines Buddha’s relics in a Silla-era pagoda. In the Osaek valley, Mangwolsa and Seongguksa provide quieter retreats, with the latter housing a designated three-story stone pagoda from the Unified Silla period.
