Historic Churches & Monasteries

Smolensk is home to some of Russia's oldest architectural monuments, including three rare 12th-century pre-Mongol churches: Saints Peter and Paul, St. John the Evangelist, and the Archangel Michael. The city's religious landscape is dominated by the green-domed Dormition Cathedral on Cathedral Hill, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. These sites, along with ancient monasteries like the Abraham and Trinity, illustrate the evolution of Russian Orthodox building styles from early medieval brickwork to the ornate designs of the 18th century.
