Wilayat Sur Essentials

Wilayat Sur is a coastal region defined by its deep maritime heritage and traditional dhow-building industry. This list features the UNESCO-listed 13th-century ruins of Qalhat and the Ras Al Jinz reserve, a critical nesting site for green sea turtles. The selection includes defensive architecture such as Al-Sunaysilah and Bilad Sur castles, alongside the natural landscape of Wadi Tiwi and the iconic Al-Ayjah Lighthouse overlooking the Khor al Batar lagoon.

Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve

A protected nesting site for green sea turtles. The reserve features a research center and offers guided night and dawn tours to observe turtles laying eggs or hatchlings heading to the ocean.

Old Qalhat (archeological site)

A UNESCO World Heritage site preserving the ruins of a major 13th- to 15th-century Arabian port. The site features the Bibi Maryam mausoleum, which remains the most intact structure of the ancient city.

A deep river canyon characterized by emerald green pools, lush date and banana plantations, and traditional agricultural villages accessible via narrow winding roads.

Al-Sunaysilah Castle

A 300-year-old square fortification built on a hill to defend the town. The structure includes four circular watchtowers and a central courtyard used for local administration.

Mnart alyjt

A three-story, white-washed tower with a castellated roof. Originally built as a defensive lookout, it was later converted into a lighthouse to guide vessels into the Sur lagoon.

Dhau

An outdoor museum display featuring the Fatah al-Khair, a restored traditional Omani wooden ship that serves as a monument to the city's maritime trading history.

Dhow Yards

One of the last remaining shipyards where traditional Omani dhows are built by hand. Visitors can observe craftsmen using specialized tools to assemble large wooden vessels without modern blueprints.

Bilad Sur Castle

An inland fort designed to protect the surrounding plains from tribal raids. It features high curtain walls, four corner towers, and a restored interior showcasing local history.

Khor al Batar Bridge
